![]() I have never used it personally, but linux mint is Ubuntu based, has a much lighter desktop environment, and is considered easier for a windows user to migrate to as lot's of the desktop paradigms are the same (it has a start menu, etc). I can recommend Ubuntu, as in my opinion it will "just work" in this instance, although with 4GB of ram you might consider one of the more lightweight versions of it such as xUbuntu or lUbuntu. If you just want to browse the web, maybe use discord or spotify etc, it might do the job for you just fine, and would be a better long-term OS for your creaky old machine. I'm trying to keep the PC as bare bones as possible so I've not installed any third party anti virus, but was wondering if I were to install one would it disable the AntiMalware Service Executable or would it still run?ĭepending on what you want to do with the machine in the interim, have you considered running linux on this machine? Finally I tried to disable it in group policy (gpedit.msc) via the following section but couldn't find it - Computer Configuration/Administrative Templates/Windows Components/Microsoft Defender Antivirus/Real-time ProtectionĪfter trying all this, it's still enabled and running with very high memory usage. ![]() REG ADD "hklm\software\policies\microsoft\windows defender" /v DisableAntiSpyware /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f Tried adding the following command to CMD. Gone to Regedit and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Policies/Microsoft/Windows Defender, then added "DisableAntiSpyware" and set the value to 1. Turned off Real Time Protection in Windows Security settings. ![]() The other things I've tried are listed below: I've tried to end the task and receive an "Access is denied" error message. It's currently using 41% of my available memory when checked in Task Manager. but I think one of the main issues is the AntiMalware Service Executable. ![]() I'm not expecting any miracles considering it's old and only has 4gb ram, etc, so it's pretty much a piece of crap. I'm quite PC literate so I've tried most things to speed it up. My main PC is currently in for repair so I'm having to make do with a really old PC for the time being, and it's unbelievably slow. ![]()
